Here is the first GOP lawmaker to suggest impeaching Trump if Comey memo allegations are true

Republican Rep. Justin Amash (Mich.) said Wednesday that if President Donald Trump pressured former FBI Director James Comey to end the bureau’s investigation of former national security adviser Michael Flynn, then impeachment would be warranted, according to The Hill.

Amash is the first Republican lawmaker to suggest this measure, The Hill reported.

Allegations that Trump interfered with an FBI investigation stemmed from a New York Times report Tuesday that Comey had documentation of a February conversation between him and Trump in which the president urged Comey to discontinue the investigation of Flynn.

Flynn resigned his post as national security adviser in February after coming under scrutiny for not being forthcoming to Vice President Mike Pence and White House officials about conversations with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak.

When The Hill asked Amash whether the details in Comey’s memo would warrant impeachment if proven true, the congressman responded: “Yes.”

“But everybody gets a fair trial in this country,” he said.

Pressed by another reporter on whether he had more trust in Trump or Comey, Amash replied, “I think it’s pretty clear I have more confidence in Director Comey.”

Amash said Tuesday on Twitter that the “allegations reportedly contained in the memo are incredibly serious” and that Comey “needs to testify in an open session ASAP.”

Chairman of the House Oversight Committee Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) sent a letter to the FBI on Tuesday demanding that all communications between Comey and Trump be turned over to the Oversight Committee. Chaffetz said on Twitter that the committee is going to “get the Comey memo, if it exists,” and that he needs “to see it sooner rather than later,” adding, “I have my subpoena pen ready.”

.@GOPoversight is going to get the Comey memo, if it exists. I need to see it sooner rather than later. I have my subpoena pen ready.
